Newell Experience with recovery of metals from ASR
- Before 1974 metal was recovered from ASR by hand picking.
- In 1974 Newell designed, built and operated a ferro silicon density separation plant which started with a rising water current separator.
- During the 1980’s Newell was operating these types of separation systems in San Antonio, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Hagerstown Maryland, Kansas City, Frankfurt Germany and Penne France.
- During the 1990’s the Frankfurt plant began experimenting with sensor sorting and eddy current separations.
- Newell Magnetics was formed in the UK to manufacture eddy current separators.
- The Newell family business was sold in pieces to other operators at the time of the passing of Alton Newell in 2000.
- Scott Newell and Scott Newell III began operating a scrap plant in El Paso Texas and designed and built the plant.
- The lessons learned from all of this experience has been used in the design of the latest versions of Newell metal recovery plants.
