Up from poverty to become a worldwide recycling merchant.
He didn‘t finish high school but was self-educated and later in life was awarded two different honorary doctor degrees.
At age 17, he went to work at an automobile parts yard and owned his own business in 1938 when he was 23.
He designed and built the first really portable baling press, drove to a site and start baling old automobiles and appliances. After some years of recycling metal by baling, he found that recycling the metals was a good business and he founded Newell Salvage Company, which was a successful business with 5 processing locations between Texas and New Mexico in the USA. Newell Salvage found that shredded tin cans have a better value for copper mines, he invented the Newell Shredder for that process and came to understand that the shredded steel had very good value in EAF steel making, because they are cleaner and denser, then he built the first Newell Shredder that was wide enough to shred a complete automobile body. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers named the Newell Shredder a national engineering landmark, because it has changed the way the industry works around the world.
The business activities of Scott Newell have earned the respect of the recycled metal processing industry. He has shared information in more than 100 speeches and presentations, all of which are directed at improving the sector. He is listed in Big Village which is an organization that offers contacts with experts in a number of industries, quite often he is asked to address, as a recognized expert in his industry, he has served as an expert witness in a number of legal matters, national and international conferences for steel makers and metal recycling processors.
